Permission To Use Anything and Everything as a Scarf

New York Fashion Week just came and went, leaving us with fresh inspiration on what to expect for the fall and winter seasons. These runway shows are always a good mixture of what’s already trending and what’s expected to take off. Seasons bleed into seasons as we see familiar styles mixed with fresh new ideas. One of the ongoing trends gaining more and more traction is drapey neck coverings. Throughout this winter, we’ve seen tons of fashionable people draping anything and everything over their décolletage. From cardigans to oversized scarves to coats with attached neck coverings, the message is clear: bundling up in a cozy neck covering is essential.

During the Fall/Winter 2025 runway shows, more and more brands embraced this trend — Michael Kors, Brandon Maxwell, and Calvin Klein are just a few to mention. That’s not to say this is a new style, no. Toteme had already widely popularized the scarf coat a few seasons ago, and perhaps that was the pebble in the ocean that caused a ripple effect. Can a single product cause an entire fashion tsunami? It seems so, because the Toteme coat inspired the Helsa coat inspired the Calvin coat, and in between people are draping big scarves or wrapping sweaters around their necks to achieve a similar effect.

I mention this frequently, but fashion works in a cyclical manner. I remember having an earth science teacher in high school who’s signature look was a cardigan tied over her shoulders. I admired the kind of old-fashioned appearance, which for someone in her (I’m assuming) 60s simply made sense. I wondered whether that will ever be chic for someone more in our age, and while I am 15 years older now, I’m delighted that the answer turned out to be a yes.

So come and hop on the bandwagon already! You can easily take any cozy knit in your closet and tie it around your shoulders. If you’re lacking inspiration, try any of the following sweaters, coats, or scarves.
