I’m Obsessed With Delicate Floral Detailing on Clothes
PC: Fendi
Florals? For Spring? I know, absolutely no one is surprised. But the particular florals I’m drooling over this season take a new approach to the classic pattern—I’m talking specifically about delicate, often tiny, floral detailing on all-white ensembles.
As I was scrolling through my Pinterest board this morning—coffee in hand—I noticed a pattern in the pins I’ve been saving: There were flowers everywhere. Small flowers sewn into mesh fabrics dominated my Style and Fashion board. Looking at each masterpiece, it was evident that every petal was sewn into the fine fabrics with such care, artistry, and love, that I couldn’t help but fawn over them.
Florals are far from new to the fashion scene, and neither are mesh fabrics. We’ve seen this combination thrive particularly in bridal fashion, but the fabric really dominated in the early 1800s in the regency and victorian eras. Floral embroidery on the sleeves, bodice, and hems symbolized a sense of femininity. In a time where almost all fashion was “slow” (as in: hand sewn with intention and care), each individual piece took days to weeks to complete. Thus, only the wealthy were able to purchase and own these fine garments.
As we revive the style now, the pattern still evokes a sense of affluence. It has a vintage flair and timeless appeal that, no matter how you wear it, makes you feel like a work of art. With a fabric as delicate as this, it’s near-impossible to go the “cheap” route—the seamstress has to ensure it won’t rip after one wear. It’s also something you might reserve for a special occasion (hence its popularity in bridal gowns), but with the right care, can be worn on a more casual basis as well.
I’ve seen modern women wear white floral pants and floral appliqué skirts to special events. Take inspiration from the above vintage Prada sheer tulle coat, or the below Fendi mesh dress from its 2021 Spring/Summer collection.
Perhaps this Spring, we can wear florals in a more conscious manner. Skip the bright pink flowers on dresses and consider this elevated approach instead. The delicate flowers layered on strong mesh are like a poetic representation of a woman’s feminine strength. Shop any of the below floral favorites of 2025.
