You Need A WORD OF THE YEAR, Here’s MINE

I was having coffee with one of my girlfriends the other day when we got to talking about new year’s resolutions, and she got to talking about her word of the year. It was a concept I had never thought about before, but essentially (she explained) it’s the idea of having one word to define the projection of the year. “This is amazing” I beamed, “I’m going to use this for my blog.”

Now that I’ve had some time to marinate this idea in my head and come up with my own word of the year, I feel like I’m ready to spread her genius idea so that we may all think of our word of the year, albeit one month short. I do think there are tiers, or categories, of words however. One word seems a little limiting, so I’m allowing there to be multiple words, with one main word leading the spiel. Here is my main word of the year:

Grand word of the year: Discipline

As a daydreamer, I always have a bunch of ideas and projects I want to accomplish. My problem is that I’ve been relying on motivation and motivation alone to accomplish them. Too bad motivation is about as reliable as the NYC subway system, arriving at the wrong times and gone way too quick. Rather than waiting for that burst of excitement to course through my body, I’m telling myself to be more disciplined this year. That means even when I don’t feel like it, even when I don’t want to, I listen to a higher voice that tells me shut up, just do it.

Second tier word of the year: Gentle

Gentle on myself, gentle when I’m mad, gentle towards those around me. Gentle also encompasses peace, kindness, and calmness. After a long episode of turmoil, I was recently reminded that it’s all okay. None of it is serious. I just need to smile and that’s my only responsibility in life, to be gentle and kind.

You can create a third, a fourth, and a fifth tier word should you wish to do so. You can find words in different categories, like in your love life, your career, or personal goals. Have fun with this and whenever you feel lost in your tracks, conjure up your word and it will help put you back in your flow.
