We saw it at Vogue World Paris, we saw it at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and we’re seeing it over and over again on Instagram’s it-girls: sporty-chic is in, and more specifically: striped rugby shirts. The good news is that you don’t have to support any particular team, know how to play rugby, or even like sports as a whole — this is fashion, and what matters is that the style suits and appeals to you. Perhaps I’ll write another article on the sporty trend as a whole (because soccer jerseys and tracksuits are certainly in as well). But right now, I wanted to take a moment to highlight rugby shirts in particular. Combining two big trends, stripes and sports attire, the rugby shirt has somehow taken up a large space in the fashion scene as of late. It should come to no one’s surprise, really, since it’s a natural next step within athleisure. One moment we’re sporting yoga looks, then it’s biker shorts with oversized sweatshirts, a big moment for tennis skirts, and now? Rugby sweaters.
It has a certain preppy flair to it (rugby does come with a British boarding school association), and depending on how you style it, can easily be worn to the office and to brunch all the same.
