Everything You Need to Do in NYC DURING THE HOLIDAYS
They say it’s going to be snowy Christmas in NYC this year. I think that’s pretty fair, considering we had a rather dry one last year… and the year before? Honestly, I can’t remember. My last two Christmases were already cursed — one was spent at the ER with my sisters cat and the other had me and my friends nearly trapped in an Airbnb with no water, heat, or electricity as the Canadian storm threatened to trap our cars and inevitably, kill us in the freezing weather (don’t worry, we escaped to a 4-star motel and used a hotel chair as a Christmas tree).
Dapper! Isn’t it. To be honest, 2023 isn’t looking too bright right now either, with all my friends, family, and boyfriend leaving the state/country and as a result, me. But I don’t mind. I’m making a note to the universe that it owes me three really over-the-top-amazing Christmases and we’ll call it even. At least this year, I won’t be in a near-death situation on Christmas day, whether that’s for me or my furry friends (I hope). I’m happy to just sit at home, turn on some sparkly lights, sip on champagne and watch a Hallmark movie on the couch with my dog.
I’ve also decided, that if I’m going to be spending December 24 (which is when us Europeans celebrate Christmas) alone, then I’m going to squeeze the most out of the days leading up to it. I live in one of the most magical cities in the world (goddamit), especially where the holidays are concerned! I understand people flock to the city from all over the world to experience a little New York Christmas magic, so it would be a disservice to sit and sulk. So, I’ve made a list of everything that needs to be done in NYC during the holidays in order to consider it a success. Here’s how to spend Christmas in NYC.
Watch Home Alone 2
Walk up 5th ave to see the light decorations (Bergdorf Goodman is a must)
While you’re there, do some department shopping at Saks 5th Ave
Peep at the Rockefeller Christmas tree
Go shopping (Anthropologie is my holiday go-to)
Visit Hudson Yards and check out their decorations
Go ice skating in either Bryant Park or Central Park
Go to all the Christmas markets (Columbus Circle, Union Square, Bryant Park, Grand Central Terminal)
Get lost in the books at Strand after picking up a hot chocolate at the Union Square Christmas market
Dine at Rolf’s
Drink lots of Glühwein (mulled wine)
Host a Christmas party
Bake cookies
Walk through a snowy central park
Check out the Dyker Heights holiday lights
Visit the light show at Brooklyn botanical garden
And for me, personally, I will be sitting pretty and solo at The Polo Bar to cheers to all my wins of the year ☺️
