I Tried The Borboleta Lash Serum, And It Doubled The Length of My Short Asian Lashes

In my job as a fashion and beauty writer, I get my hands on a lot of beauty products. There are only a few, however, that I finish to the last drop and pray the PR lady offers to send a new bottle. One of those items is the Borboleta Lash Growth Serum. You see, I’m Japanese, which means I naturally have rather short lashes. They’re not non-existent, they’re just not long and luscious like I see on so many other girls.

If I’m being quite honest, it never bothered me all that much—I figured I was on the lucky side since they could still hold mascara and fake a long lash. But when I heard about how miraculous the Borboleta serum was through whispers in the hallway, I was curious to give it a try. So by way of my day job I got my hands on the entire Lash Care Set, which included a lash cleanser, swoop brush, eye mask, breakdown remover, and of course, the serum. Here is my full review of the Borboleta Lash Growth Serum.

The Method

I began with the cleanser as recommended, and then applied a single layer of the serum directly on my upper eyelid’s lash line. Although I expected it to sting, I was surprised to feel absolutely zero sensation. It came out so carefully that it didn’t even drip into my eye (it never did). However, the very first morning I woke up with this, I noticed some crust around my eyes and some redness on my under eyes. The crust was easy to wash off, but the redness stayed on the entire day—the provided eye mask was extremely soothing, however. For that reason I skipped the serum that night and let my eyes rest. Something told me to continue, however, and that my eyes would get used to this new product. And so by day three I was already applying it again, and sure enough, my eyes stopped having any adverse reactions, allowing me to wake up looking like my usual self. I ended up using it about three to four days a week, always in the evening, for a three weeks.

The Results

Okay, wow. I’ve never used any lash serum before this so I have nothing to compare it to, but I can’t imagine any other product doing it better than this. The results came in fast—already by the end of the first week I started to notice some growth. By week two it was obvious how much longer my lashes looked. I was amazed that even without a lash curler or mascara, you could actually see that I had eyelashes. They grew in straight (I’ve heard of somewhere they curl upwards, but that wasn’t the case for me). More impressively, even my partner noticed a change in length (without me asking!!!).

Editor’s Notes

  • I didn’t end up finishing the bottle of cleanser, and while the brush was fun to play around with for ritualistic reasons, I recommend these more for the truly careful and not the lazy (hi, me).

  • I’m a couple months in now, and use the serum sporadically. I go a few months without using it when I think I’ve reached my desired length (and to not overdo it). When I feel like my lashes have shrunk again, I return to using the serum, making the tub last quite long.
