Can we all agree that the summer heat has us reaching for different kinds of foods? Like, nothing hits the spot quite like a cold juicy grapefruit after a day in the sun. It quenches our thirst, tingles our tongues, and shoots us with an abundance of vitamin C.

It’s true that in the summer our bodies function differently than in the winter. For one, we excrete much more water, which leaves us in danger of dehydration. Our metabolism also begins to slow down as it no longer requires to work hard to keep us warm. So it only makes sense that we feed our bodies a summer appropriate diet. Lucky for us, summer calls for fruitful soil and an abundance of nutritious, fresh fruits and vegetables. Today we’re listing some of our favorite summer foods to keep us cool as a cucumber through the heat.

Watermelons

A classic summer fruit (even though it low-key makes me nauseous) is the watermelon. It’s got the ability to cool you down and hydrate you in the tastiest way.

Peaches

Peaches are my absolute favorite summer fruit. While they’re quite hard to come by in the winter, they fill the fruit isles with an intense aroma in the summer and I am HERE for it. Throw ‘em on the grill with some goat cheese and mint or eat as is.

Cucumber

You probably already know that cucumbers are made of 96% water, making them the most hydrating food to exist on planet earth. Eat them in a cold refreshing summer salad to keep yourself hydrated in the heat.

Corn

Honestly, who doesn’t love corn? Peak corn season is in July and August, so stock up on these delicious earthy foods in those months when they’re the freshest.

Blueberries

Let me just say that the blueberry is the powerhouse of ALL foods. Period. This little summer berry is packed with antioxidants and is one of the healthiest fruits known to man. Grab a friend and go on a blueberry picking trip to stock up on these beauties!

Tomatoes

What’s summer without juicy tomatoes? Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C (forming collagen and repairing body tissues), vitamin K (for strong bones), and potassium (for metabolizing carbs). Basically, it’s a super summer “fruit”.

Grapefruits

Alas, my favorite: the grapefruit. PACKED with vitamin C, this juicy juicy fruit will have you feeling extraordinarily refreshed in the summer. Snack it with some mint and blueberries!
